Belize Blog Monday March 18, 2019
Greetings Iowans and other friends! Today marked the beginning of our official work in Belize. We started the day with our devotions at Grace Primary and Grace Secondary Schools. We sang songs with the children, preformed skits, and shared Bible lessons. After we finished at Grace, we headed to our work sites for a long day of projects. We are split into 3 teams working on 3 large projects. The first team is working on renovating a home for a mother and her autistic child. The main things that the home is needing is 2 new sets of stairs, some new walls (we would use drywall, they use something more like hardened cardboard), new kitchen floor, new siding, and some paint. We finished a lot of demolition today and half of the kitchen floor. We are praying that we will be able to finish by Friday!
The second team is working on the caretaker’s home of Open Door Believer Church, the church that we’ve teamed up with the past 9 years in Belize. It’s awesome to be able to serve this community of believers we have come to know and love. The team is working on replacing all the windows in the home, replacing doors, and doing some work with the facia and soffit on the roof, and at the very end the home will get a new coat of paint. This project is particularly difficult because the windows are set in concrete and we don’t have a concrete saw.
Our final group is working on the Church itself. They are reroofing part of it, so the rain drains properly. They have to break out a lot of concrete, pour a new slab, and then coat it with a layer of finish. The second part of the job is putting up a fence. The fencing is a foundation of concrete with block on top followed by chain link. They spent their day doing a lot of heavy lifting with pick axes and shovels in the hot Belize sun!
This year’s trip we’re also adding a new mission for the kiddos of Belize, softball! We took our first group of kids to practice getting a glove, throwing a ball (tennis balls!), and of course a game of monkey in the middle. Tomorrow we’ll try batting!
We ended the day visiting the big Belize sign and lighthouse and went out for fro-yo as a team. We are all excited to see how our projects turn out and to see what other surprises Nomar and Ryan have in store for us.
